It’s been a little over
a month since the news of Chadwick Boseman’s passing shocked us all. He died at
the age of 43 after fighting a battle against cancer for years. His body of
work is nothing short of remarkable, but we wish we had seen more for him. His
last movie venture was with Netflix; it was called Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,
and it’s time, Netflix drops the trailer.
After the tragic news
broke, the streaming service postponed the virtual event plugged for Ma
Rainey’s Black Bottom. The movie will now release on 18th December.
The first look of the movie seems promising, and the wonderful cast includes the
Academy Award-winning actress, Viola Davis.
Throughout his career,
Boseman has stood out as the most reliable actor for starring in biographical
movies and TV shows like Get on Up, Marshall, and 42. His last movie is also going to be a
biopic and it is set in the Chicago of 1920s – the golden era of Jazz.
Gertrude “Ma” Rainey
was amongst the first professional American blues singers, lovingly known as
the “Mother of Blues”. This movie is
inspired by her life as a musician. Chadwick Boseman will be essaying the role
of Levee – the trumpeter of Rainey’s band. He was determined and a visionary,
just like Chadwick Bose!
Viola Davis spoke to
The New York Times about the heartbreaking truth of Chadwick Boseman’s life and
her experience working with him.
She said: “A lot of actors mistake their presence for
the event. An actor of Chadwick’s status usually comes on and it’s their ego
who comes on before them: This is what they want, this is what they’re not
going to do. That was absolutely, 150 percent off the table with Chadwick.
He
could completely discard whatever ego he had, whatever vanity he had, and
welcome Levee in.”
The rest of the cast
includes Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Taylour Page, Jonny Coyne
Jeremy Shamos and Dusan Brown. George C. Wolfe serves as the director of the
movie while Ruben Santigo-Hudson has written the script.
Although people
remember Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, he has done several other exemplary projects as well. For example, he totally blew us away with his performance as Stormin’
Norm Holloway. And apart from this, we will be able to hear his voice one last
time in Disney+’s upcoming series What If…? The premise of the episode which he features in will explore the possibility of
T’Challa becoming Star-Lord instead of Black Panther.
