Is controversy after Taylor Swift or Taylor Swift after controversy? Guess we’ll never find out. The world-famous singer has landed herself in yet another controversy, and this time we’re on her side. 

It’s no longer news that Taylor Swift lost the rights to her early music to her former label, Big Machine Label Group. Her displeasure became more evident and loud when she saw music manager Scooter Braun buy the rights of her music from her previous label. 

What this information essentially means is that Taylor can’t sing her own songs at any platform without their consent. In an overwhelmingly disheartening letter, she penned down some thoughts about this matter. She wrote, “I’ve been planning to perform a medley of my hits throughout the decade on the show. Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun have now said that I’m not allowed to perform my old songs on television because they claim that would be re-recording my music before I’m allowed to next year.”

The news broke out in July when she claimed that it was the worst-case scenario and seems like not much has changed ever since. However, she wouldn’t be Taylor if she doesn’t go down without a proper fight. After all, it is her goddamn right.

So, she further added that “Scott Bocchetta told my team that they’ll allow me to use my music only if I do these things: If I agree to not re-record copycat versions of my songs next year (which is something I’m both legally allowed to do and looking forward to) and also told my team that I need to stop talking about him and Scooter Braun. The message being sent to me is very clear. Basically, be a good little girl and shut up. Or you’ll be punished.”

One of the reasons why Taylor decided to come out in the open with her story is that she believes that many upcoming artists get exploited like this on a regular basis. As a person in power, she expressed that she needed to get this story out; otherwise, the pattern of abuse and manipulation would never witness its finality.

Now let’s discuss the technicalities so that the problem becomes crystal clear to understand. 

Basically, Taylor’s former label, Big Machine Label Group legally owns every single asset from her first album that released in 2006 to the album she released in 2017. Later on, this group sold all her work to Scooter Braun as part of a $300 million deal. When Taylor found out about this, she openly called out Scooter Braun for bullying her and Scott Bocchetta for his hypocrisy. “This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term “loyalty” is clearly just a contractual concept.”

Those who aren’t aware of Scooter Braun and Taylor Swifts history, here’s a quick recap. 

Well, to begin with, Braun manages Kanye West. And Taylor and Kanye go way back! Their story has four main characters. Kim Kardashian, VMAs, the infamous music video of the song Famous, and snakes.

In 2009, when Taylor won the award for Best Female Video, Kanye jumped on stage, took her mic and dropped the famous sentence that started with “I’ma let you finish…” – He never did. By 2015, both of them decided to get along by hugging it out. This was followed by her presenting the Video Vanguard Award to him and him sending her flowers. 

And then, West stabbed her in the back. By 2016, West dropped his infamous song famous which showed a naked body of Taylor in bed supported by these controversial lyrics – “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that b***h famous.”

Anyway – long story short, Taylor called him out in her Grammy-winning speech, Ms Kardashian released recorded audio that made Taylor appearing to be a liar and then snakes got involved. 

If there’s one man behind all of this, it is Kanye West’s manager Scooter Braun. So, now imagine the horror when Taylor finds out that her entire career is in jeopardy and in the hands of the man who has always tried to break her spirits. 

Ever since Taylor broke her silence, her fans and the entire music industry have raised their voice against such hypocritical, back-stabbing, and unfair contracts. This has obviously sent a negative force towards Scooter Braun. So, in his defense, he has made the following statement. 

Guess the men love playing the family man card when they don’t get to misuse their power.
