On Saturday, #RespectSelenaGomez
was trending on Twitter as fans came to her rescue when she was unnecessarily
disrespected and dragged in the Saved by the Bell reboot. References about Selena’s
kidney transplant were made, which were completely uncalled for and utterly
despicable.
Selena Gomez made the
announcement back in 2017 that she had received the transplant from her close
friend, Francia Raisa. However, in one of the episodes, the series had two
Bayside High School students discussing whether or not it was Justin Beiber’s
mother who made the kidney donation.
And that was not it. The
show also made a mockery out of her complicated friendship with Demi Lovato. This
is how the scene went on: “I know for a fact that Selena Gomez’s
kidney donor was Justin Bieber’s mom. God, I wish that I had my phone so that I
could prove it.” – One student had claimed. “Prove what?” the other
asked. “That you’re an idiot? It was Demi Lovato’s kidney. They’re best
friends like you and I were.”
And if you thought that
this was over, you’re in for yet another shock. There was another scene where
there was graffiti all over the wall, and it read: “Does Selena Gomez even have a
kidney?”
Of course, the show
received a lot of backlash and NBCUniversal, Peacock, and the executive
producers of the show made a public apology for the references. Isn’t it easy
to apologize after the damage is already made? The references seem personal
and intentional. It seemed as if the writer was keen on attacking Selena Gomez,
which is why they not only made fun of the kidney transplant but also her
damaged relationship with Demi Lovato.
Who even approved this
script, by the way? Were the actors on set okay while saying these lines out
loud? Where was the director? There are literally hundreds of people who were
involved in making those scenes, so how come nobody found this wrong, and they
felt the need to apologize only after the public sent out a negative reaction?
Is there some sort of
hidden beef? Even if it’s that, is basic human decency lost? Frankly, Selena’s
reputation remains undeterred, so they’ve only made a fool out of themselves in
public. Nobody in their right mind would utter these words out loud, so this
apology is useless.
This is what the
statement said: “We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s
health. We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to
her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC.”
Of course, you make the
donations to show that you’re not making fun of the disease or the people
who’ve donated their organs and risked lives. We reached out to Selena and
representatives for a comment, but there has been no response yet.
Back in 2017, Gomez had
undergone a kidney transplant as a result of complications due to her lupus.
She revealed to her fans about the lupus diagnosis two years prior to that. She
has also gone through chemotherapy for this. In 2016, she had also taken a break
from the spotlight, as her mental health started deteriorating due to the
diagnosis. Selena has said that the only reason she made the diagnosis public
is to spread awareness regarding the autoimmune disease and eventually become
its advocate.
This reckless treatment of public information by the showrunners angered not only Selena’s fans but
also the regular readers. They were appalled by the nonchalant way this
dialogue was written for two high school students. What had happened that
forced them to utter this garbage? Their phones were snatched! That’s it.
Anyway, this disrespect
directly attributed to the emergence of a new hashtag #RespectSelenaGomez on Twitter. Francia, her donor, has addressed
the situation on her social media platform: She said that while she appreciated
the apology, she feels that we must not forget about the donors who might’ve
felt offended and dismissed from the writing on the wall. She said that she
wants to show love and appreciation to the other donors and let them know that
they’re not alone. She admires their bravery and selflessness and told them
that they’re highly valued.
There are already
countless Selena Gomez memes on the internet, but these 19 heartless memes are
just callous. Anyway, some of them include reactions to Selena Gomez kidney
transplant as well.
