Lilly Wachowski – the co-creator of Matrix disapproved when Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump quoted her movie.
Last Sunday, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX made the following cryptic tweet:
Any movie fanatic would know the history of this quote. It’s from the sci-fi blockbuster “The Matrix.” In the movie, Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne accepts that he’s been living in a computer simulation. After making this revelation to Neo (Keanu Reeves) he gives him a choice to make: Either take the blue pill and forget about everything and go back to his ordinary life or take the red pill and learn about the truth of the Matrix and his fake reality.
“Take the red pill” has other meanings in the internet subculture. Usually, it reflects the conservative political beliefs of a person. Sometimes, it is also used by men’s groups and Donald Trump fans.
Hence, when Musk tweeted this, it gave rise to yet another controversy. What made it worse? Ivanka Trump quoted his tweet saying “Taken!”
Obviously, this did not sit well with Wachowski who eventually replied “F--- both of you.”
Wachowski then used this viral tweet to bring awareness to the LGBTQ social services called Brave Space Alliance and urged people to donate. I feel like Musk needs to go on a social media hiatus. This lockdown is clearly making him part of one controversy after the other. Just last week he threatened to relocate Tesla’s headquarters and sue the Bay Area’s Alameda County for following the shelter-in-place orders.
Wachowski is currently working on the fourth installment of the popular franchise with both Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss set to return. The production has stopped because of the pandemic but they’ll hopefully resume sometime in July.
