We have finally said goodbye to the strangest year in our collective lives. It was messy and tragic; it robbed us of many things we would’ve done in 2020.

But if you thought it would stop us from celebrating New Year in style, you couldn’t be more wrong. While many countries did cancel their firework shows, others remained on track and prepared some of the craziest and magnificent displays and shows we’ve ever seen.

Check out the three things you must do in 2021!

From Asia to Europe, this is how 2021 was welcomed around the world.

New Zealand

The Island nation of New Zealand was one of the first countries to welcome 2021. A huge fireworks display at the Sky Tower in Auckland consisted of over 500kg of crackers. As there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, it’s New Year celebrations looked more or less like all the previous years.

The newly-elected Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has implemented strict measures and a quarantine policy for people entering the country. This has helped the government curb the virus effectively.

Australia

Sydney’s celebrations were next in line with a beautiful and mesmerizing display of fireworks over the city’s harbor. Rockets were fired from the Opera House and they colored the sky, the reflection of the fireworks in the water was something to be marveled at.

It was a crowd-free event, unlike the one we saw in Auckland. Unfortunately for Sydney’s people, they were forced to watch the show from their homes because there has been a fresh outbreak of COVID-19 in the city.

Taiwan

Being the first country in Asia to ring 2021, Taiwan didn’t disappoint its extravagant celebrations and fireworks in Taipei. The show’s theme was ‘love’, which took place over a period of five minutes. Over 16,000 fireworks were used in the display. The main event included the formation of red and blue hearts all over the sky to pay tribute to the medical front-liners who are giving their all to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thailand

As the clock struck 12, the Bangkok skies lit up with colorful fireworks shot from boats standing on the Chao Phraya river that snakes through the entire city. The display was accompanied by live music by the amazing Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. A giant digital screen was also present that displayed messages of love and hope for the people. The theme of the 2021 celebrations was optimism for the future.

Dubai

The greatest New Year celebrations in the Middle East took place in Dubai, at the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa. The skyscraper was lit up for a light show while fireworks were shot from the building’s sides. At midnight, the Burj Kahlifa displayed flags of the countries that celebrated the New Year before the UAE. Crowds covered in masks were seen all around Jumeirah beach and the city’s downtown, admiring the firework display.

Russia

The Russian capital had a fireworks display at the central square. The Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral has always been the focus of New Year celebrations. The streets were devoid of revelers as strict pandemic restrictions have been implemented in the country.

South Africa

Besides the celebrations, a New Year’s Eve memorial for the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic was held in Johannesburg in South Africa on the Nelson Mandela Bridge.

United States

New Year’s Eve celebration at Time Square in New York used to be the biggest event in the country. This year, there was a limited live audience as confetti fell from the sky and the ball dropped. The audiences included families of first responders and essential workers fighting COVID-19 with all their might.

France

What was extremely sad was that fireworks shows and celebrations were canceled throughout Paris to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. A curfew was imposed at 8 pm to ensure everyone stayed inside and safe.

Germany

While citizens were urged to stay indoors to curb the spread of the virus on New Year’s Eve, a spectacular display of fireworks took place over the Brandenburg Gate that was also live-streamed.

Netherlands

One of the most beautiful firework shows happened in Rotterdam over the Erasmus Bridge. People enjoyed the show from the beachfront while following the necessary SOPs.

After celebrating the start of 2021 with so much positive energy and high spirit, we hope it turns out to be better than 2020. On that note, we wish you a very happy New Year. May 2021 bring you lots of love, health, wealth, and happiness.
