The History and Cultural Impact of “shit,” “fuck” “bitch,” “pussy” “dick,” and “damn.”

We think most of us
would agree on one thing: cursing is an art form that can be taught to
everyone (not even to these jerk celebrities), even the most prudent ones. Believe it or not, we’re living in a time
when the most famous four letter word is “fuck” and not “love”. Of course, this
has a cultural impact because lust has taken over every other feeling and the
entire generation’s idea of love is fucked.

Anyway, let’s not
deviate from what we intend to do in this blog. We’re planning to bring
attention to the most used cuss words today. You might have seen, not just the
Millennials, but people from every generation, drop these bombs from time to
time. Some of them have become so common that they hold no offense whatsoever.
However, some of the words are still considered rude and sexist, and we’ll come
to the sexist part later.

Check out the The History Swear Words – Top 20 viral memes and trailer below to know more about swear words’ history!

Let’s start from the
foundation – what is definition of swearing?

According to
Merriam-Webster.com, swearing is simply an act of using profane and obscene
language. In the universe of linguistics, swearing is an action that people opt
for when they’re experiencing intense emotions. It’s not that important to
understand why people swear if you’re honestly asking us. But since we’re on
the topic, why not put our foot down and get it dirty?

To start with, swearing
is never planned, it is always spontaneous. Like, if a person cracked a joke,
and you thought it was ridiculously hilarious, your colloquial way to convey
that message will be to exclaim “that was fucking hilarious, bro!”. Don’t you
agree?

It’s not something that
you’ll think about before saying out loud; you’ll feel like the response was
just hanging on your tongue, waiting to slip. And the person you’d say this to
won’t feel bad or offended either, because the context is super chill.

But here’s when
swearing gets a bit complicated: There are two kinds of swearing: propositional
and non-propositional. When it comes to propositional swearing, the person has
a purpose and so they use profanity with intention and a goal in mind. For
instance, the person may want to use the term “mental institution” but to
offend you (the purpose) they’d use profane language and go for the term “loony
bin” instead.

Then we have
non-propositional swearing: this is cathartic and is not considered rude; it is
mostly used to relieve the tension that’s building up inside you. So, think of
the time when your pinky toe collided with the corner of your bed. Imagined
yet? Now think of the pain it causes because it’s insane in the first few
minutes. A person would naturally react to it by cursing out loud, but not to
anyone person in particular, since it’s literally nobody’s fault.

Here’s a question: How
frequently do you swear?
Don’t lie, we know you do!

Do you know that no
matter how hard parents try, children somehow get exposed to swearing? Of
course, the frequency and the level of offensiveness may vary. Swearing is a
huge part of our culture – you’ll find it in books, movies, social media, in
physical fights, music, etc.

Another strange thing that
has been observed in the recent years is that swearing has found a place in
literally every environment. You would imagine that a place like your office
would be professional and no one would opt for profane language there, but it’s
not exactly the truth. Students, working professionals, mothers, teenagers,
grandparents, everyone engages in profanity more often than you can imagine.

It’s just that the
level or the type of cuss word varies. Like, you’d mostly find boomers using
cuss words like “damn” and “jeez”, whereas millennials’ instinctive response to
literally anything and everything is “fuck” and “shit”. Is it because the
people of this generation are more frustrated than the one before them?

Now you have to realize
that you can’t use cuss words everywhere, as you’ll be faced with social
consequences. Like we said before, it has now become almost normal to use
profane language in offices. However, can you imagine doing any such thing in a
church? At a funeral? Or at a child’s birthday party? No, right? It’s just not
going to sound right and you’ll be made to feel guilty to a whole new level.

An interesting study
has suggested that people who swear unnecessarily and more frequently have
brain damage. So… is your brain damaged?

Let’s get down to the
meaning of some of the most famous cuss words because, no matter what you
think, using profane language without knowing the meaning actually makes you
look stupid. At least, know what you’re saying.

Shit

This is the most common
profane word used today. It’s actually an easy word that can be used in combination
with other words, like “this shit” and “GOAT shit”, etc. Its meaning is simple:
feces.

Fuck

This is another cuss
word that is used mostly by the millennials. Now believe it or not, fuck has a
variety of meanings and it’s always interchangeable. It’s the most unique word
in the history of cuss words, but it is mostly used as a measurement.

Like, something is
“fucking disgusting” or someone is “fucking out of their mind”. Basically,
something it too much or too bizarre (just like these TikTok challenges). So take it as a bar or a measuring tape
because it emphasizes every human emotion.

Bitch

Bitch is mostly used
for women who’re strong headed and have a mind of their own. Men prefer to use
this word for women who don’t buy their bullshit. If a woman says “no” to their
proposal, she’s a bitch. It hurts their ego, you see.

Pussy

This is a sexist slang
which people use to describe men. Of course, it’s a female genital, but
insecure men like to use this word to describe other men who may come across as
a bit timid, cowardly, or stereotypically feminine.

Dick

Dick is obviously a
male’s genital. It is used to describe someone who you find annoying and
frustrating. This slang is used for both men and women.

Damn

Finally, damn is a
slang but more of an expression. You can use it in both happy and unfortunate
moments. Again, this is one of those words that can be used interchangeably
with varied meanings and intentions.

So, we hope that
you’ve understood the history and cultural impact and the origins of cuss words
like “fuck”, “shit” and “damn”. To find out more about the meaning and cultural
