Lionel Messi, one of the most prominent soccer stars, dropped a bombshell news and shook the internet last night. He informed Barcelona that he wants to leave the club with immediate effect.

By invoking a clause on his contract, it will allow him to abandon the club, where he spent almost his entire career, without having to pay any compensation fee.

After the Catalan side’s humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich, in the Champions League quarter finals, he witnessed his club plunged into yet another burst of internal chaos. The manager, Quique Setien and Eric Abidal, the sporting director, both left the club and a former Barcelona player, Ronald Koeman, was selected as coach.

The news of his leaving didn’t come as shocking for the club itself. Club President, Josep Maria Bartomeu told Barça TV, “Messi has said many times that he wants to finish his career at Barca.

In July 2017, Barcelona and Messi signed a contract extension that would keep him with the team until June 30, 2021 and is worth about €565,000 ($645,000) a week.

He has been in the club since 2000.

The six time Ballon d’Or winner made his league debut for Barcelona club in 2014. He has helped Barcelona to bag 10 league titles, including the Champions League four times. He is, no doubt, considered the finest player Barcelona has ever had and the greatest soccer player of all time.

Messi has previously urged to end his career at Camp Nou, but the madness of the previous season, in which the club experienced a haunting and humiliating defeat and operated, in last eight months, through three managers, seems to have been a lot to tolerate.

The news prompted fans to gather outside Camp Nou, where Barcelona’s executives were attending an immediate meeting, to ask the resignation of the club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board. There’s still hope that they might convince him to stay in the club.

Since the news broke, many Europe elite are queuing up to sign arguably the best player in the history of soccer, but Messi may have a change of heart and could surprise everyone by his next move.

It’s a sad day indeed for all the Barca fans… do you want to cheer up your friend’s mood who must be devastated by the news? Make sure to give them a Messi Pro Training Ball, FC Barcelona Aluminum Messi Drink Bottle, banbotoys Messi Action Figure Toy and Bagazzi Barca Soccer Jersey. I am pretty sure they will be happy to have these goodies.
