According to the Financial Times, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has apparently agreed to phase out Huawei equipment from the UK’s 5G networks. UK’s conservative party is strongly advocating for the removal of Huawei technology from the 5G infrastructure and other telecom networks of the UK by 2023.
Trump has always been against the use to foreign-made telecommunications equipment as he feels that they might pose a threat to national security and risk financial growth. Hence, he signed an executive order last May that banned US companies from buying foreign-made telecommunications equipment. Contrary to popular belief, the order isn’t singling out one company, but it’s targeting many Chinese firms like ZTE and Huawei. The ban has been extended till May 2021.
Trump has accused Huawei of spying efforts. He asserts that these devices might potentially aid the Chinese government in their spying efforts – a charge that the telecommunication company has simply denied.
