The source code for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP has apparently leaked online. In addition,
the torrent files of both the operating systems have been published on
different file sharing websites this week. This is a major blunder, but it is
also being said that this code has been shared for years on private platforms
online.

The material leaks online and is definitely legitimate and the company has claimed that it’s
investigating the matter.

However, there’s no
indication that this source code can pose a threat to organizations still using Windows
XP machines. The Windows XP support was ended back in 2014 by Microsoft,
but the company replied to the huge WannaCry malware attack by patching up
again in 2017.

This may be the first
time for the source code of Windows XP to have leaked online publicly, but Microsoft
has settled a special contract with Government Security Program, which permits
the government and many organizations complete access to the source code as
well as the technical content.

The latest XP leak
definitely is not the first time a Microsoft’s source code has come up online. A
few years ago, source code related to approximately 1GB of Windows 10 was leaked
online. In fact, Microsoft has even experienced a series of source
code leaks related to Xbox in 2020. Back in May, the source code of Windows
NT 3.5 and Original Xbox appeared online. This happened a couple of months after the Xbox Series
X graphic source code was stolen as well as leaked online.

We’re not entirely sure
how much of the source code is leaked but one expert has found Microsoft‘s
NetMeeting user certificate with signed keys. Parts of the leak refer to MS-DOS, Microsoft’s Windows CE operating systems, and other leaked Microsoft
material.

The strange thing that
we found was the reference to Bill Gates conspiracy theories. It was definitely
an attempt to conspire against him and spread misinformation.
